How a consultation works
- History firstYou get time to describe the problem properly before any prescription is written.
- ExaminationA proper clinical examination, with ECG or bedside tests where the presentation calls for it.
- A written planDiagnosis, medication with clear instructions, and specific warning signs that should bring you back sooner.
- Investigations only when they change somethingTests are ordered when the result will alter the decision, not as routine.
- Referral when neededOnward referral to a specialist or a hospital service, with the reason explained.
Bring with you: current medication (the boxes or strips, not just the names), previous prescriptions, and any test reports from the past year.
When not to come to the clinic
An outpatient clinic is the wrong place for a genuine emergency. Call 112 or go directly to the nearest emergency department for crushing or persistent chest pain, sudden breathlessness, sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, difficulty speaking, severe bleeding, a seizure, or unresponsiveness.
